Consulting, art direction and fabrication for The Red Door, a laid-back martini bar which opened its doors to downtown Salt Lake City in 2002. The Red Door was named one of The Best Bars in America by Esquire Magazine and has been featured in the New York Times and Guardian UK travel sections. Photos courtesy of the The Red Door.
Louise Hannig, owner of the Red Door, asked me for some ideas as she neared completion of her now famous bar. I suggested overwhelming the small space with an oversized graphic of Che. Louise loved it, and a whole identity for the bar was born.
After being open a while, Louise felt a certain corner of the bar was lacking a point of focus. I kicked around a hundred ideas until it finally occurred to me - A religious shrine to a sainted monkey king - It was almost too obvious. Although I understand people argue about the exact species of the monkey, only I know it's true origins. A secret I will take to my grave.
